Beginner’s Guide to Anime: Mecha Edition

Finding and selecting anime under the Mecha genre is a little bit difficult because most anime on this list have Sci-Fi listed in their genre, so it ultimately came down to me to decide where to put the anime. So, these are the ones I decide to put in.

You can read my other entries in the Beginners Guide here:
1. Beginners Guide to Anime
2. Romance
3. Comedy
4. Slice of Life
5. Sports
6. Supernatural
7. Action / Adventure
8. Harem
9. Psychological
10. Sci-Fi
11. Mecha

NOTE: This list only contains my preference and your preference might defer. If you have a recommendation that did not make the list, please add it in the comments for other to know about.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

Gurren Lagann is that kind of anime that you fall in love with from the get-go. Superbly designed fight scenes, brilliant OST’s and fantastic mecha design makes this anime an absolute treat to watch.

Code Geass

Code Geass is filled with action, loads of it in fact. It has good visuals and a decent storyline making it easier for newcomers to get into the mecha genre.

Bokurano has a brilliant opening song. This anime is psychological, sci-fi and mecha all at the same time and is also an underrated anime in this list.

Full Metal Panic!

Full Metal Panic! has a good mixture of humor, mecha fights, and suspense. The execution is well done, and the anime feels well-balanced enough in terms of pacing too.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans

Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans is a brilliant anime. There are very few anime that look as cool as this anime does when it does it’s fight scenes, and boy are they glorious. Though, set in the Mobile Suit universe, it is an independent anime and does not require you to watch the other Metal Suit anime.

NOTE: Though its not needed, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you watch the other Mobile Suit Gundam if you like mecha as a genre or this Mobile Suit Gundam.

Aldnoah.Zero is an original anime and starts of calmly it quickly turns into a political anime where two different factions are at war with each other. It’s a good anime with really cool mecha scenes, so if you like huge robots fighting, this is also a good choice.

Soukou Kihei Votoms

VOTOMS is an old anime, first airing in 1983 and has around 52 episodes. It is really good at storytelling and does a damn good job at that. Give it a watch, despite its age.

Special: Neon Genesis Evangelion

Adding this anime is sort of a risk because this might make you more interested in anime in general, as it shows a different side of anime that is rarely publicized or it might turn you away from anime in general. A really well written and well-directed anime with an equally superb animation to help it out. This anime is one of the best anime out there and has still held out well enough despite its age.

This concludes my Mecha list, the second last one to this series. The next and the final list will be the Movie list, where I will be recommending movies that newcomers and veterans alike should watch.
